Email Marketing for Restaurants: A Plan That Measures Bookings

Email marketing for a restaurant works best when a message has one useful reason to arrive and one measurable action. A new menu, a quiet midweek service or a reservation opening can provide that reason. “Send more emails” is not a business objective.

Start with a permission-based audience

Offer an understandable signup on the restaurant’s site or at an appropriate customer touchpoint. Tell people what they will receive. Mailchimp’s restaurant guide discusses opt-in forms and audience communication; it is a vendor source, so its promotional claims are not independent proof of results.

Keep marketing preferences separate from information needed to fulfil a reservation. A customer providing an email address for a booking should not be treated as agreeing to every future campaign without checking applicable requirements.

Give each campaign a narrow job

For a first test, choose a service, an audience and an action. For example: invite opted-in local subscribers to book a Wednesday set menu. Show the date, price and any restrictions accurately, then link to the relevant reservation page.

Use a descriptive link and simple campaign tags so the restaurant can identify visits originating from the email. Avoid several competing calls to action that make the result hard to interpret.

A worked example

Suppose a fictional campaign reaches 1,000 subscribers and records 60 reservation-page visits. If 12 of those visits produce bookings, the click-to-booking rate is 20%. That is 12 divided by 60, not 12 divided by the original list.

If those bookings generate 30 covers, examine the contribution from those covers after food, staffing and promotional costs. Revenue alone is not campaign profit, and attributed bookings are not automatically incremental bookings.

Build trust into the message

The US FTC’s CAN-SPAM guide discusses truthful headers, accurate subjects, advertising identification, a postal address and an opt-out mechanism. Other countries can impose different consent and privacy requirements. Use the rules that apply to the restaurant and its audience rather than copying a global template blindly.

Make unsubscribing easy and honour the relevant process. A short-term response gain is not valuable if it damages customer trust.

Why this topic appears here

The phrase rose in worldwide Finance and Business & Industrial searches. That is evidence of interest in the question, not a measured restaurant return on investment.
